She was first known for her 1980s role in Tezaab, in which she co-starred with veteran actor Anil Koopor. Her next film was the movie Dil In which she shared the screen with Aamir Khan. In Mumbai her home, she grew up by middle class parents. When she was a young age, she started to take dance lessons. In her early years, as she began acting as a young actress, most of the films she produced did not succeed. She finally found success, and she went on to be one of the most prominent actresses within the Indian film industry. After her wedding, she took a break in her career before re-entering the business. Recently, she played a major part as a character in Gulaab Gang. The film focused on the struggles of women across India. Dixit has received 15 Filmfare Awards nominations, of which eight she won. She was also honored with the Padma Shri the fourth highest civilian award in India. She also has a reputation for her social activism.
